How to reset your energy without a juice cleanse

Yvette Rose · 6 min read

Juice cleanses fail because juice is sugar with the fibre removed, which spikes and drops blood sugar, and because three days changes no habit. What works instead is subtracting load for two weeks: protein at breakfast and dinner, daylight on waking, last coffee before noon, and a set bedtime.

Every January the same offer comes round. Three days of juice and a clean slate. It works for about eleven days, and then you conclude you lack discipline. You do not.

Every January the same offer comes round. Three days of juice, a hard reset, a clean slate. It works for about eleven days, and then it does not, and you conclude that you lack discipline.

You do not. The plan was built to be dropped.

Why the juice cleanse fails specifically

Juice is sugar with the fibre taken out. You drink it, your blood sugar rises quickly, insulin answers, and you are hungry and irritable an hour later. Do that for three days with almost no protein and no fat, and by day four your body wants everything it was denied, urgently.

Then there is the deeper problem. It teaches you nothing. You get through three difficult days, you feel virtuous, and on day four you are back to exactly the life that produced the problem, with no new information and no new habit.

A plan you have to survive is a plan you will not repeat.

What to do in January instead

Take load off rather than adding a challenge on top. Every one of these subtracts something.

Thirty grams of protein at breakfast. Before or with the coffee, not instead of it. This one change removes the eleven o'clock crash and the four o'clock crash that follows it, and it is the change people notice fastest, usually within four days.

Protein and fat at dinner, every night. This is what stops the three a.m. wake-up, because your blood sugar stops dropping overnight and your body stops using cortisol to fix it. More on that in Issue 002.

Last coffee before noon. Caffeine has a half-life of about six hours. A three o'clock coffee still has a quarter of its dose in you at three in the morning. You will sleep through it and it will still hold you in the shallow end.

Ten minutes of daylight within half an hour of waking. Outside, no sunglasses. It sets the clock that decides when you get sleepy tonight, and it works better than anything you can buy.

Walk after dinner. Ten minutes. It blunts the glucose rise from the meal you just ate, and it is the least demanding useful thing on this list.

A bedtime, on a weeknight. Not a sleep target. A time you start going to bed. Most people are not short of sleep advice, they are short of a decision made in advance.

Give it fourteen days, not three

Three days is long enough to feel deprived and too short to feel different. Fourteen is long enough that your sleep changes, which is the thing that changes everything else.

Do not add anything in week one. Just the six above. If you want to go further, go further in February, from a body that has something to spend.

What actually goes wrong in the second week

It is almost never the food. It is a bad night, or a work crisis, or someone else's birthday, and then the missed day becomes a story about yourself, and the story ends it.

Decide now: you will miss days. When you do, the next meal is the plan again. There is no streak to protect and nothing to start over.

If you want it decided for you

Everything above is free and you can start tomorrow. If what you actually want is not to have to think about it, that is what the 10 Day Reset is: a sheet with times on it, meal plans mapped to the days, worksheets, and 79 recipes portioned out, for $125. Nothing left to decide at the point in the day when you have the least left to decide with.

Questions I get asked

Do juice cleanses actually work?

Not for anything lasting. Juice is sugar without the fibre, so it spikes and drops your blood sugar, and with almost no protein or fat you end up hungrier than you started. The bigger problem is that three hard days teach you nothing and change no habit, so day four looks exactly like the day before you began.

What is the single best change to make in January?

Thirty grams of protein at breakfast, before or with the coffee. It removes the mid-morning crash and the afternoon one that follows, and most people notice it within four days.

How long should a reset be?

Long enough for your sleep to change, which for most people is around two weeks. Three days is long enough to feel deprived and too short to feel different.

What if I miss a day?

The next meal is the plan again. Missed days are not what ends these things. What ends them is treating a missed day as evidence about yourself. There is no streak to protect.

If you want it in order

Everything above is the ground floor. The 10 Day Reset is the same work with times on the page, meal plans, worksheets and 79 recipes, for $125, so nothing is left for you to decide when you are tired. Or put your email in below and I will send you the 7 Day Energy Reset, which is free.
